Watch the full episodeThe first episode explores how Ghent came to be.
We look at the two abbeys, two castles and two harbours that together made Ghent, but also at more recent history: the rescue and restoration of the Gravensteen, for example, and the demolition of the Prinsenhof, among others.
We trace the many waterways Ghent once had, and its city gates and walls, such as the Kuipgat, the Walpoort and the Wolweverskapel, and what we can still see of them today.

Where teaching seems to be the sole preserve of various Catholic orders, the start of the 19th century brings an explosion of colleges, a university and several public schools. The city has to adapt, and entire neighbourhoods make way for palaces of learning. Student housing and student protests are covered too. Much of this heritage can still be admired today.
